about

This album was a 1999 side-project recorded in Nashville by myself and two members of my band The Nevers. We were signed to Sire Records at the time and were in limbo awaiting the release of our debut album. I had some older songs laying around, so we decided to record fresh versions of them in a makeshift digital home studio. We chose the band name The Have Nots as a lark and made up some silly nonsense for the CD notes.

The songs were written from roughly 1993 to 1997. In true 90's fashion, there is a secret track, "People Will Talk", a demo recording of a Knoxville band I briefly had around 1995 called The Dynamatics.

"The Best Mistake (I'd Ever Make Again)" was later reworked into a duet for another side-project, Motel Mirrors, my band with Amy LaVere. We recut it for our debut EP in 2013.

The track "Blue All Over" features Bucky Baxter, former Bob Dylan and Steve Earle sideman, on pedal steel and fiddle. Bucky passed away in May of 2020.

This is available online for the first time in a lossless format exclusively for my Bandcamp subscribers.
